Alphonse de Lamartine

Alphonse de Lamartine, author of the Poetic Meditations, was a key figure of literary Romanticism. He was also a politician, appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1848 during the Second Republic. David, a great admirer of the poet, depicted him as if inspired, with slightly tousled hair swept back from his forehead.
