Objectives
Being able to weave a drapery :
- While respecting the cartoon
- By applying known techniques : aplats, battages, battages traversés, perfilage, stripes, optical stripes, etc.
- Using between three and five colors maximum from the same range
- Without shrinking
- Without ribbing
- With straight and regular selvedges
Instructions
Make the cartoon by tracing the model.
Observe the model and anticipate the techniques to apply.
To make it easier to understand, you can simulate the techniques you want to use on the tracing paper or model using colored pencils.

Setup of the warp : 16 portées on 2 lames
Calculate the length of warp needed to make the tapestry – 60 x 35 cm in 16 portées.
Know the size of cotton yarn to use for assembling a 16-portées warp.
Know the number of yarns per cm of a 16-portées warp.
Know and master the different stages of assembling a warp.
Warp (ourdir), and master the technical gestures.
Install the crenille on the loom correctly.
Put the rope in place.
Pass the heddles.
Tie tension knots.
Pass the warp yarns to equalize.
Equalize
Faire cailler the warp.
Make warp yarns passées, in order to start weaving.
Making the cartoon
Choose the most appropriate weaving direction for the given model
Use the cartoon codification. Understand and know when to use a continuous line or a dotted line.
Identify and define areas of color gradations and clear shapes.
Produce a drawing conforming to the given model. Suggest an relevant interpretation of the lines and shapes.
Know how to place the different values in order to recreate the illusion of draping: folds, light and shadow, modeling.
Recreate through drawing (lines) and the play of values (color gradations) the illusion of the weight of the fabric and the folds.
Produce a precise and careful drawing.
Search for colors: making a string of colors.
Make a string of colors : one color in different values for the drapery and one color for the background
Offer a range of colors available in different values with regular differences: rhythm.
Create a coherent background/shape (drapery) chromatic relationship.
Weaving
Place the cartoon under the warp yarns
Propose and carry out the weaving techniques most suited to the interpretation of the given image: aplats, stripes, optical stripes, battages, battages traversés, etc.
Master a plain fabric: no ribbing
No shrinking
Make liures
Finger weave
Weave oval and curved shapes
Weave diagonals
Make the requested tapestry while respecting the given time.
