  • Introduction:

    • Perfilage is a technique used in tapestry weaving to join two areas of different colors in a way that balances visibility and blending. This technique is particularly useful for creating smooth transitions between color blocks or managing areas where different colors meet.

  • How to Combine Two Areas of Different Colors:

    • Meeting on an Oblique Line:
      When two areas of different colors meet along an oblique or curved line, it involves the careful alignment of colors and their interaction along the transition line. This is something we will not be focusing on in this course.

    • Meeting on a Vertical Warp Thread:
      When the areas meet vertically on a single warp thread, you can either:

      • Separate the Areas: This involves creating a clear demarcation between the two colors.This is the kilim technique.

      • Join the Areas: This blends the colors together for a more cohesive look.

      The choice between Kilim and perfilage will depend on whether you want a clear demarcation or a more blended effect:
      • Kilim Slit: For a straight and basic look.
      • Perfilage: For a softer look.

    • What to Avoid:

      • Never decide to do a Kilim work and then try to join the areas when you take down the work by sewing on the reverse side. This would not be weaving but fixing a mistake, and the final result may be unsatisfactory.

  • Steps for Perfilage:

    • 1st step:

      The blue zone and the orange-pink zone are on the same level. You weave in the first warp thread of the blue area with orange-pink thread and weave your half-pass.

      2nd step: 

      On your orange-pink half-pass, position yourself on the usual warp thread for this zone.

      3rd step:

      With your blue yarn, pick up the border warp yarn. The previous orange-pink half-pass helps prevent the border warp thread from becoming too thick.

  • The various Perfilage:

    • Simple Perfilage:
      To be used when linking two areas of similar color or intensity.

      Linking Areas with Different Wool Thicknesses      :
      When connecting two zones made of wool of different thicknesses, you should introduce the thinner wool into the thicker wool zone, not the other way around. Otherwise, the overlap will almost disappear when the next half-pass is woven.

  • Graphical Effects of the Perfilage:

      1. Perfilage compensé : In this case, two or more warp threads are used for the color overlap area.

      2. Perfilage simple groupé : Only one warp thread is used for the color overlap area, but several full passes of weft of the same color are made consecutively. The number of wefts can be regular (crenelated) or irregular.

      3. Perfilage compensé groupé : Your overlap area consists of 2 or more full passes of weft of the same color, either regularly or irregularly.
