Attaching the clay down to the wheel head is crucial. It helps to have an even round shape that's thrown against the wheel. This way no air can be trapped beneath the clay when it's slammed down. Pat your balls of clay into spheres, or at least into a shape with a rounded base and a conical top. Now, the obvious next step is to throw the clay as accurately into the middle as you possibly can and to slam it down firmly. This way it sticks onto the metal.
